	Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to work on this ship. Younger volunteers from the age of 16 may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, subject to approval by the department head and the ship's master. Following an interview with the ship's department head an application must be completed. This form will require 3 references and information about work history and felony convictions. Each application must be signed, returned, reviewed and approved by the department head and the ship's master before any volunteer may begin any work for the ship. There will be no exception to this rule. The crew of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien is an all-volunteer crew. Volunteers are not paid for their time, work or service as members of the crew or organization. Membership to the National Liberty Ship Memorial is required to acquire and retain official crew privileges. Individual membership is renewable every December, and can be paid through a $50 fee or in exchange for earned crew hours. Those who become a volunteer later in the year are given a grace period to accrue volunteer hours sufficient to become members and recurring membership dues are then due the following December.
